Academic Career

Chohan specializes in comprehensive surgical care for patients with primary and metastatic brain and spine tumors. He specializes in brain mapping and “awake brain surgery” to identify vital areas that control language, movement and memory. He also uses intraoperative fluoroscopy to “color-code” tumor cells to enhance safety during surgery and maximize tumor removal. His other area of clinical focus is in spine tumors, where he uses modern techniques like stereotactic radiosurgery for malignant spine tumors.

With colleagues at the UNM Cancer Center he established a modern, multidisciplinary and comprehensive neuro-oncology program, bringing cutting-edge treatments and clinical trials to New Mexico. He completed his neurosurgery residency training at UNM, then a neurosurgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He obtained additional training in minimally invasive endoscopic neurosurgery at New York’s Weill Cornell Medical College.

Research Interests

Chohan is interested in mechanisms that underlie traumatic brain injury and neurocognitive decline. He has developed a small molecule that appears to stimulate stem cell-induced brain repair and cognitive improvement after traumatic brain injury. He hopes to bring this promising therapy to a first-in-human clinical trial.
