Academic Career

Dr. Foster is Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery.  She joins UNM after completing her fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.  She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, her medical school education at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and residency training the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Her clinical interests include general pediatric neurosurgery, with an emphasis on brain and spinal cord tumors, spasticity and the endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus. In addition, Dr. Foster’s pediatric practice includes epilepsy, congenital spinal abnormalities, pediatric cerebrovascular disease and craniosynostosis. She has also performed neurosurgery in Africa and South East Asia, and is active in global neurosurgery efforts.

Dr. Foster leads the pediatric neurosurgery efforts at UNM, leading a comprehensive center of excellence for the treatment of all pediatric neurosurgical diseases. In conjunction with neuro-oncology, complete surgical and oncologic care is available to the children of New Mexico with brain and spinal cord cancer. Together, the oncology team conducts a multi-disciplinary oncology clinic and tumor board. Dr. Foster works with plastic surgery to perform craniofacial procedures, with biweekly head shape clinic and joint surgical approaches to this disease. She performs the endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus in pediatric patients and offers life-long care to children born with congenital spinal abnormalities, from surgery in infancy to continued care in a regular spina bifida clinic. Dr. Foster offers baclofen pump treatment for children with spasticity, works with the epilepsy team to offer surgical options to appropriate children with seizure disorders, and oversees the care of children with brain and spinal trauma, from concussion to operative injury.

She has received numerous awards and honors including the Stuart Rowe Society Best Resident Research in 2011, 2013, 2014, Dean's Scholar (full medical school tuition) 2004 - 2008, and the Keith Edson Scholar through UoC International Health, Calcutta, India.

While Dr. Foster specializes in Pediatric Neurosurgery she is also certified in all areas of general adult neurosurgery. Her training and experience has allowed her to easily transfer her skills to either pediatric or adult.

Research Interests

Dr. Foster continues her efforts in the laboratory, where she examines molecular-targeted therapies for high grade brain tumors and pursues the discovery of molecular markers for pediatric brain tumors.  She plans to systematically study the outcomes of pediatric head trauma and research the value of intracranial monitoring for pediatric severe head injury.  She also examines animal models of non-accidental head trauma in the pediatric population.
